(About)
Glaze chemistry, slow cooling, and a little luck
(Bio)
I'm a ceramic artist on the East End of New York. Most of my work is porcelain finished in crystalline glaze, a process where zinc and silica crystals grow across the surface while the kiln cools. The chemistry and the firing schedule set the conditions. The crystals decide the rest, which is why no two pieces match.
I also slip cast and 3D print in clay, and I teach crystalline glaze workshops at the Clay Art Guild of the Hamptons and classes at Mudita Ceramics School. My work has been shown at the Parrish Art Museum.
(Process)
- 1
Form
Each piece is thrown, slip cast in a plaster mold, or printed layer by layer in clay.
- 2
Glaze
Glazes are mixed by hand from raw materials, with zinc and silica as the crystal builders.
- 3
Fire
The kiln holds at set temperatures on the way down, and that's where the crystals grow.
